There’s a place, deep in the cosmos, where jam bands and electronic dance music intersect with rhythm-driven funk.  The futuristic funk fighters that are Colorado’s very own SunSquabi sat down and chatted with us about their come up, joining All Good Records, and their upcoming new music.

We sat down with Kevin (lead guitar/keys/production), Josh (bassist/synth) and Chris (drums) at the Mohawk green room in Austin, TX before they took the stage to put Austin fans in a constant flow of funky jams. After the interview Sunsquabi kicked off their live set with ‘Pgymy Up’ and they didn’t let the crowd stop grooving until the set was over. Check out our interview below as well as some live footage from their set in Austin.

Where are you from and where did you meet?

We’re from Boulder, Boston, Missouri and met in Boulder with our old bass player and immediately went to recruit a drummer.  Josh joined us 2 years ago and but collectively have been playing music for over 10 years.

How did you end up getting on All Good Records?

It originally started out working on a collaboration with Manic Focus.  He had sent it over to GRiZ and we were just about finished with our album as they were going to release that song (Say It Loud).  Just a really good hardworking who has helped us out a lot getting started.  We had known him since 2012 at Sonic Bloom.

Where does Sunsquabi’s sound come from?

We all listen to similar things but definitely have individual taste.  A lot of rock, hip hop, electronic and the rest is history.  I started listening to ATB and trance when i was 12 or 13 and Boards of Canada and obscure of electronic stuff – I don’t even know why I liked it so much – but I definitely still love it now.  We like to play all kinds of music because we listen to all kinds of music.

What’s coming up for you?
We’ve put out 2 singles this year and we’re going to release one more before releasing a full album.  The album is called The Instinct and it’s about animals, it’s about biology, it’s about evolution evoked through song.  It’s been really fun getting it finished over the next mont or two.
